Prism Technology PHOTOMAX Ink, quality by what test?

Prism Technology has put together a test to confirm the quality of PRISM ink, including PHOTOMAX. Particle size and spray test, smear comparison, 3-day long-term stability test, light and water fastness and non-toxic test are also examined in numbers.

Inkjet inks look similar to each other only when they are bottled. Differences are evident in numbers such as particle size, whether properties are retained over time, and whether they do not smudge on paper.

Prism Technology is publishing the original test conditions and results of PRISM ink, including PHOTOMAX, on its website. In this article, we have put together the R&D data and the eco-certification data in order of examination.

Quality numbers at a glance

  1. average particle size 91.7nm, particle size distribution (PDI) 0.252 (general pigment ink 143.1nm, 0.452 under same conditions)
  2. Long-term stability: 3-day harsh test, corresponding to 2 years of room temperature storage, no change in quality
  3. Storage: Room temperature sealed for 2 years, storage temperature -15 ℃ ~ 60 ℃
  4. Production: Pigment ink kite 500mt, Dye ink kite 500mt, 100% domestic production
  5. Safety: Self-certification test required, Fiti light and water color fastness test, GLP standard non-toxic test

Particle size and distribution, starting point of nozzle clogging

The average particle size measured under the same conditions is 91.7nm with PRISM pigment ink and 143.1nm with regular pigment ink. The particle size distribution (PDI), which indicates how even the particle size is, also differs between 0.252 and 0.452.

The smaller and more even the particles, the less clogging and smudging the nozzle and the longer the color lasts. Prism Technology creates this level of pigment dispersion with its own nano-dispersion process. The difference between pigment ink and dye ink is set aside in the pigment ink and dye ink, what is the difference is set out in the article.

Injection test, does each nozzle come out at the same speed

The ink uniformity test measures the speed at which the ink droplets fly (Droplet Velocity) by the nozzle number of the print head. The PRISM ink maintained an even spray rate from 0 to 128 nozzles.

Ink with even spray rate has low nozzle contamination and clogging, and performance is maintained even in continuous printing. In contrast, uneven ink had an unstable spray rate, resulting in no printing during continuous printing.

Smudge comparison, black at color ink boundary

The border between color ink and black ink is where smudges can easily appear. Prism Technology printed HP 973 genuine ink, PRISM HP 973 ink, and third party HP 973 ink on plain copy paper (Double A) under the same conditions and compared the letter edges enlarged by 10x.

Made from high quality raw materials and nano dispersion, PRISM black does not smudge over colour inks. Comparison photos are still available on the R&D page.

Long-term stability test, how to check 2 years in 3 days

The test ink is PRISM HP 9010 pigment/dye ink (black, cyan, magenta, yellow). Density (UV spectrometer), pH and viscosity were measured at a temperature of 20 ℃ ± 0.5 ℃ and a humidity of 55% ± 5%.

Property change was confirmed by repeating 70 ℃ ± 0.5 ℃ heating and -15 ℃ ± 0.5 ℃ cooling in the weatherometer for 3 days. The Prism Technology interprets these three days of harsh conditions as the equivalent of two years of room temperature storage.

The result is no change in quality. For example, HP 9010 pigment black had a starting value of density of 611, pH of 8.2, and viscosity of 2.8, and maintained a similar range with density of 609 · 605, pH of 8.1, and viscosity of 2.5 · 2.7 even after heating and cooling on day 3.

This result is followed by archival criteria. It is sealed at room temperature for 2 years, opened for 1-3 months, stored in the CISS for 3-6 months, and has a storage temperature of -15 ℃ to 60 ℃.

Light and water fastness and non-toxic, the original text of the report is released

How long the print resists light and water was tested by the Fiti Laboratory (Korea Yarn Textile Research Institute). Non-toxicity was confirmed in line with internationally accepted GLP standards.

In Korea, the safety standards according to the "Act on the Safety Management of Biochemicals and Biocides" have been confirmed (Korea Environmental Industry and Technology Institute, 2020), and non-toxic data for export to Japan and safety data based on European and American standards are also available. Heavy metals such as lead, cadmium and mercury and solvents harmful to the human body are not used.

All three documents are available in the original PDF format on the EcoCertification page and in the archives at.

Research and production facilities supporting the test

Bucheon Technopark's research institute is equipped with particle size analysis equipment, nano dispersion equipment, pigment ink dispersibility testing equipment, salt and pigment purification devices, and a number of printing equipment.

Production is carried out in a high-clean environment, and the automatic filling and sealing process prevents contamination and minimizes deviation between lots. Pigment inks and dye inks are produced 100% domestically at an annual scale of 500 MT each.

Prism Technology has a certificate of R&D type venture company (expiration date 2026.02.28-2029.02.27).

Frequently asked questions

Q. Why is the 3-day exam part of 2-year storage?

70 ℃ heating and -15 ℃ cooling are repeated for 3 days under severe conditions. The Prism Technology interprets this condition as corresponding to two years of room temperature storage.

Q. Where can I access my test report?

You can view the fiti test report, the certificate of declaration confirming compliance with safety standards, and the results of non-toxic tests of ink products (excerpts) in PDF on the Eco-friendly Certification page and in the Resource Center.

Q. What ink did you try?

Long-term stability was tested with PRISM HP 9010 pigment and dye ink 4-color, smudge comparison with HP 973 ink.
